Hi Guest!! What's on your mind?
Why are most Nigerians (not all though) unpatriotic.

we don't love our country then how do we expect it to grow, we feel that nothing good can ever come out from Nigeria and we don't play our part as civilized citizens all we do is keep on blaming our leader for every bad thing that has been happening, our leaders to are messing up big time, how will one person have the mind to loot and launder billions of dollars meant for the development of our great nation by now we suppose to be competiting with countries like south Africa,America,Asia etc. in term of development so my question is why are Nigerians unpatriotic?

But i believe after our indepence , Nigeria was doing fine, obedient, trusting, helpful, cheerful until the first deal breaker (Biafran war )
then there after it has been Disaster after disaster, Military government, They killed and tortured
Civilian government leading to riots and murders
eventually Nigerians realized NO GOVERNMENT cares about them, especially these days with the revelation about Billions and trillions being dashed out to people for unreasonable purposes ? That's how Nigerians realized it's all man for himself,
I think the problem we have is government, if we can have a government that truly cares for citizens, we will trust government and then learn to trust ourselves
The past should not be erased, rather it should be a lesson , an experience, something we can learn from to make Nigeria better again

Most of them don't believe in team work that can yield positive result in our country.. Nigeria is home of great people with so Mich love, kindness but some how some way, one has to act in that way just cuz of an evil that has been done to him...

There are several factors that can be identified as reasons why most Nigerians are not patriotic...
1. We don't see ourselves as Nigerians first before talking about our ethnic groups. We first identify ourselves based on our ethnic groups before putting our nationality.
2. The Nigerian system doesn't encourage patriotism. I believe many Nigerians are ready to stick their necks for the country but the problem is that it will be in vain.
3. We easily forget about our heroes: Take a look at the man who designed our flag, was he well taken care of? Look at our military and police personnel, many of them die in active service and their families are made to suffer and go through hell... Their welfare is not taken care of.

Like a certain American leader once said don't think of what your country can do for you but think of what you can do for your country; (I'm paraphrasing). This statement was made because his country has done a lot for him and therefore it is only natural to return the favor.

The reason why nigerians are unpatriotic is simply down to the fact that the citizens are yet to understand what the concept of "state" encapsulates. Nigerians are still living in the belief that the tribe they belong to is much more important than Nigeria itself. Nigerians are however in my view not to be blamed because they were just brought together without any prior consent from the citizens themselves. This is different from that of the Americans who intentionally agreed to come together and form a state.

The answer is simple, the government has failed us. If the right thing is done by the government and other top officials in power, patriotism will come naturally. In a country where corruption is the order of the day (broad day light corruption), patriotism will be the last thing on an average Nigerian's mind. If corruption isn't tackled, then patriotism in Nigeria will forever be a fairytale.
